Cal Poly Swept by Stanford in Home Sunday Doubleheader

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly softball program equaled Stanford's eight-hit total to open a Sunday doubleheader at Bob Janssen Field, but the Mustangs stranded nine baserunners as the Cardinal prevailed, 4-0. Cal Poly also fell in game No. 2 in five innings, 14-0
During Sunday's opening matchup, Cal Poly starting junior lefthander Krystyna Allman (2-2) retired Stanford in order during the top of the first before Cardinal starting righthander Alana Vawter (9-1) struck out four Mustangs – senior designated player Shelby Jeffries reached on a swinging third strike that doubled as a wild pitch – to close the inning.
Stanford (14-4) then notched the game's opening run in the second as designated player Eleni Spirakis led off with a triple before scoring through a one-out sacrifice fly from third baseman Sydney Steele.
Cal Poly's best opportunity to equalize came in the bottom of the fourth as the Mustangs received successive two-out singles from sophomore shortstop Xiara Diaz and senior left fielder Jackie Napoli before junior pinch hitter Lily Amos drew a full-count walk to load the bases. Vawter, however, forced an inning-ending groundout from Mustang sophomore second baseman Juju Sargent.
Following Stanford's lone run, Allman faced just two Cardinal hitters over the minimum between the third and fifth innings. Stanford, however, increased the lead to 3-0 in the sixth through a run-scoring hit from Spirakis and run-scoring sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Kristina Inouye. Stanford then added its final run in the seventh via a Mustang throwing error.
Allman finished with four hits against zero walks while senior center fielder Noellah Ramos (above) and Diaz each finished with a team high two hits for Cal Poly in the opener.
During Sunday's second game, Stanford led wire-to-wire once more, scoring three times in the top of the first on just two hits. Stanford ran the advantage to 4-0 in the second, loading the bases on two Cal Poly walks and an error before Spirakis delivered a run-scoring sacrifice fly.
Highlighted by a two-run triple from second baseman Sydnee Huff, Stanford then added a six-run third inning to go up 10-0.
Cal Poly collected three hits against Stanford starting righthander Regan Krause (4-3) with Jeffries singling in the first, junior shortstop Maddie Amos doubling to lead off the fourth and senior second baseman Sarah Wulff adding a base hit in the fifth.
Cal Poly (5-5) completes its 10-game home stand and opens Big West Conference action when hosting CSUN for a March 20-21, three-game series. Action gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 20.
