Cal Poly Splits Doubleheader Behind Jeffries Four-Hitter
3/20/2021 3:50:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly softball program stranded 11 baserunners and CSUN never trailed after hitting two first-inning home runs as the Mustangs opened Big West Conference play and a three-game series against the Matadors on Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 loss at Bob Janssen Field. Cal Poly, however, split Saturday's doubleheader with a 3-1 win the nightcap as senior righthander Shelby Jeffries (above) tossed a complete-game, four-hitter with five strikeouts.
During Saturday's opening decision, CSUN led off the game with two solo home runs – the first an inside-the-park effort down the left field line from designated player Alexis Lemus and the second a deep shot off the bat of center fielder Jaymi Steward following an 11-pitch at-bat.
Following Steward's homer, however, Cal Poly starting junior lefthander Krystyna Allman (2-3) faced just two Matadors over the minimum through the fifth.
Held to one hit through the opening two innings, Cal Poly tied the matchup during the bottom of the third through a one-out, two-run infield single by senior center fielder Noellah Ramos that plated senior second baseman Sarah Wulff and sophomore center fielder Sydney Frankenberger.
Cal Poly's best opportunity to surge ahead occurred during the fifth, but CSUN starting lefthander Kenedee Jamerson (1-0) struck out Mustang junior shortstop Maddie Amos with runners at the corner bases.
CSUN then regained the lead in the sixth with first baseman Kiarra Crockett-Pope delivering a run-scoring single before second baseman Paloma Usquiano produced a sacrifice fly that brought home left fielder Savannah Favre for a 4-2 advantage.
The Mustangs loaded the bases with two down during the bottom half of the sixth against CSUN righthanded reliever Eryka Gonzales before Frankenberger grounded out to end the threat.
Cal Poly loaded the bases once more in the seventh with junior left fielder Lily Amos drawing a two-out walk to bring home Jeffries for the 4-3 disadvantage. Gonzalez, however, forced a game-ending flyout from sophomore catcher Kai Barrett.
Frankenberger, Barrett and sophomore shortstop Xiara Diaz each finished with two hits for Cal Poly. Allman, meanwhile, struck out five Matadors in defeat.
During Saturday's second matchup, Jeffries (1-1) struck out two Matadors in the top of the first inning and the Mustangs grabbed the lead during the bottom half with Maddie Amos producing a two-out, infield hit to bring home Ramos from second base.
Cal Poly then added two more runs in the third with Jeffries doubling home Ramos from second base before scoring herself after Maddie Amos deposited a single into center field.
After conceding a CSUN hit in the first, Jeffries retired the Matadors in order to close the top of the second and third. She stranded two Matadors in scoring position in the fourth before setting down CSUN in order during the fifth and sixth.
CSUN notched its lone run in the top of the seventh as pinch hitter Jaclyn Silva singled home Jamerson.
