HONOLULU, O’ahu – Opening its final road series of 2026 with a Friday afternoon doubleheader at Hawai’i, the Cal Poly softball program sustained a pair of 8-0 setbacks at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
During Saturday’s opening loss, Hawai’i produced all the eventual offense required for victory during the bottom of the first inning with designated player Millie Fidge and third baseman Carys Murakami supplying run-scoring hits.
A second-inning RBI double from Rainbow Wahine center fielder Maycen Gibbs pushed Hawai’i’s lead to 3-0 before second baseman Briana MaioSilva hit a two-run homer in the fourth. The hosts added two more runs in the fifth before pinch hitter Ellyanna Cinzori cemented the run-rule decision by scoring pinch runner Abby Sasaki with a two-out single in the sixth.
Offensively, Cal Poly saw its first 11 batters retired in order by Hawai’i starting righthander Taryn Irimata before sophomore catcher Maya Venegas singled with two down in the top half. Venegas (above), however, was thrown out at second attempting to stretch the hit.
Cal Poly’s best chance to break onto the scoreboard occurred in the fifth when center fielder A’Niyla Byrd and third baseman Mylina Garza reached on successive one-out Hawai’i errors. Both reached scoring position through sophomore second baseman Sienna Erskine’s sacrifice bunt, but sophomore designated player JJ Pina grounded out to end the threat.
During Saturday’s second defeat, Hawai’i once more took the initial lead during the bottom of the first with Fidge doubling to center field to plate third baseman Jamie McGaughey. Shortstop Milan Ah Yat then doubled the advantage in the second with a leadoff homer.
The Rainbow Wahine placed the game out of reach with a four-run third inning highlighted by a bases-clearing double from left fielder Cierra Yamamoto. Two more runs from the hosts during the bottom of the fifth accounted for the 8-0, run-rule decision.
Offensively, Cal Poly was limited to one hit by Hawai’i starting righthander Maryn MacNeil with senior left fielder Kiara Blanchard singling to lead off the fourth.
Cal Poly completes the three-game series with a 2 p.m. PT matchup on Saturday, April 25.
