Cal Poly Takes Series from CSUN with 4-3 Sunday Win
3/21/2021 4:39:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO — Xiara Diaz snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning on Sunday, earning her second RBI of the afternoon, ultimately leading the Cal Poly softball team over CSUN at Bob Janssen Field, 4-3 to also secure a Big West series win.
Cal Poly (improving to 7-6 overall; 2-1 in conference play) required just six pitches from CSUN starting lefthander Kenedee Jamerson (1-1) to take the game's only lead, with senior center fielder Noellah Ramos singling on the first pitch and sophomore right fielder Sydney Frankenberger bunting her way on base with the second.
Senior designated player Shelby Jeffries then delivered a run-scoring double down the right-field line before Diaz plated Frankenberger with a base hit through the right side of the infield as Cal Poly departed the first leading 2-0.
In the circle, junior lefthander Krystyna Allman — assisted by a double play — retired CSUN in order during the first. She stranded two Matador baserunners in the second, before CSUN (now 1-2 after opening their 2021 season with BWC play) notched its opening run in the third as a groundout from shortstop Aaliyah Swan brought home third baseman Journey Rojas.
Jeffries then took over for Allman in the circle and, after CSUN loaded the bases with one down, Cal Poly turned a second double play to escape with the 2-1 lead.
CSUN registered leadoff hits to open the second, third, fourth and the fifth, when the Matadors tied the scoreline. After Cal Poly turned its third double play of the game, Jamerson singled home left fielder Savannah Favre to deadlock the matchup, 2-2.
Cal Poly, however, regained the lead at the first opportunity, as Diaz followed a two-out double from junior third baseman Maddie Amos with her single. Senior left fielder Jackie Napoli then doubled the advantage by plating Diaz with a base hit into center field.
CSUN threatened once more in the decisive seventh inning, as Swan (who had gotten on base with a double) scored following a fielding error at second base. With the tying run on first, however, the Mustangs were able to secure a fly-out to left field and then ended the game with the final out recorded at first base.
Diaz, a sophomore shortstop from Brentwood (out of Heritage HS), upped her 2021 batting average to .346 during the victory.
Jeffries earned the win, scattering five hits in 4 2/3 innings of work, to move to 2-1.
Cal Poly continues conference play next weekend traveling to UC Riverside. The series will start with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, before wrapping up with a 1 p.m. finale March 28 at Harrison Softball Field.
