Cal Poly Splits Saturday Doubleheader at UC Riverside
3/27/2021 3:42:00 PM | Softball
RIVERSIDE – Sophomore shortstop Xiara Diaz's second collegiate home run helped the Cal Poly softball program build an early lead Saturday afternoon versus UC Riverside and the Mustangs survived a seventh-inning rally from the Highlanders to secure a 6-5, series-opening win at Amy S. Harrison Field. Cal Poly, however, settled for a split after dropping game No. 2, 10-7
During Saturday's opening victory, Cal Poly (8-7, 3-2) was retired in order during the top of the first inning before recording the game's opening run in the second without a hit. With one down, Diaz (above) was hit by UC Riverside starting righthander Chrys Hildebrand (1-4) before junior left fielder Lily Amos drew a walk. Two batters later, sophomore catcher Kai Barrett reached on a Hildebrand error with Diaz scoring through the miscue.
The Mustangs then went up 4-0 in the third with Diaz hitting her first homer of the season to left field. Cal Poly scored twice more in the fourth as center fielder Noellah Ramos plated fellow senior Sarah Wulff with a two-out triple before reaching home herself through sophomore right fielder Sydney Frankenberger's single up the middle.
In the circle, Cal Poly junior lefthander Krystyna Allman (3-3) allowed solitary hits to UC (2-12, 1-4) Riverside in each of the opening three innings while stranding five total Highlanders. She stranded two more baserunners to close the fourth before conceding UC Riverside's opening two runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Cal Poly took a 6-2 advantage into the bottom of the seventh before shortstop Marissa Burke drew a leadoff walk ahead of shortstop Kennedi Sorensen's single down the right field line. Left fielder Maiah Motta then homered to cut Cal Poly's lead to 6-5. Allman, however, retired the next three Highlanders to cement victory.
Diaz and Wulff enjoyed two hits apiece for Cal Poly during the opener.
During Saturday's second matchup, Cal Poly took its only lead of the game at the first chance as Ramos and Frankenberger enjoyed successive singles to lead off the game before Jeffries produced a run-scoring base hit.
UC Riverside, however, countered with three runs during the bottom half of the first with Burke enjoying a run-scoring single before designated player Briza Blanco produced a two-out, two-run single to place the Highlanders up, 3-1.
Cal Poly grabbed a run back in the third with senior third baseman Hannah Ramelot following a one-out double from junior third baseman Maddie Amos with a run-scoring hit. The Highlanders though added three more runs during the bottom half of the third and one in the fourth to take a 7-2 advantage.
A UC Riverside error in the fifth helped Cal Poly to two more runs, but the Highlanders added another three-run inning during the bottom half to complete their scoring.
Ramos and Jeffries each recorded three-hit efforts in the game No. 2 defeat.
