RIVERSIDE – Junior lefthander Krystyna Allman scattered seven UC Riverside hits and struck out two Highlanders Sunday afternoon, but a second-inning error from the Cal Poly softball program led to the lone run at Amy S. Harrison Field as the Mustangs closed a three-game series with a 1-0 loss.
After allowing two UC Riverside hits in the first inning, Allman (3-4) retired the first two Highlander hitters to open the bottom half of the second. UC Riverside right fielder Allison Troche and center fielder Leah Brito, however, followed with singles. With first baseman Shelbie Caro at the plate, Troche attempted to steal third before scoring on a throwing error by Mustang catcher Kai Barrett. With Cal Poly trailing, 1-0, Allman struck out Caro to end the inning.
Held hitless and without a runner past first base through the opening four innings, Cal Poly's best chance to break through against UC Riverside starting righthander Chrys Hildebrand (2-4) came in the fifth. Senior first baseman Hailey Martin led off with a base hit and senior left fielder Jackie Napoli followed with a one-out bunt before junior pinch hitter Lily Amos singled to load the bases. Senior center fielder Noellah Ramos next reached base on a fielder's choice, but sophomore pinch runner Juju Sargent – on for Martin – was thrown out at home. Sophomore right fielder Sydney Frankenberger then lined out to end the threat.
Cal Poly (8-8, 3-3) was kept hitless and without a baserunner the remainder of the day.
Cal Poly closes a six-game road trip with a three-game, April 2-3 series at UC Santa Barbara. The series opens with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 2.
