During Friday's opening victory, Cal Poly (8-10, 3-5) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth as junior left fielder Lily Amos hit her first home run of the season. UC Santa Barbara, however, scored twice during the bottom half and four more times in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
Cal Poly halved UC Santa Barbara's lead in the top of the sixth as senior first baseman Hailey Martin followed a one-out double by junior third baseman Maddie Amos (above) with her second homer of the year.
After UC Santa Barbara (7-18, 4-4) stretched the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth through a run-scoring sacrifice fly by third baseman Ashley Donaldson, Cal Poly received a leadoff single from senior center fielder Noellah Ramos to start the seventh. After sophomore right fielder Sydney Frankenberger was hit, senior designated player Shelby Jeffries hit her second homer of the year – a three-run shot – to trim UC Santa Barbara's lead to 7-6.
Alyssa Molina replaced fellow righthander Emily Schuttish in the circle, but Maddie Amos welcomed the Gauchos reliever with a solo home run that tied the matchup, 7-7.
Sophomore shortstop Xiara Diaz and Martin followed with singles before Lily Amos reached on a fielding error by UC Santa Barbara second baseman Maci Fines. The miscue allowed Diaz to score and hand Cal Poly an 8-7 lead.
The Gauchos, however, received successive hits to open the bottom half of the seventh before a Fines infield bunt plated left fielder Sammy Fabian to tie the game. Two batters later, catcher Teah Thies added a run-scoring double as the Gauchos walked off 9-8 winners.
Maddie Amos and Martin both enjoyed three-hit efforts in the opener. Junior lefthander Krystyna Allman (3-5) took the loss for Cal Poly despite striking out four.
During Friday's second matchup, UC Santa Barbara grabbed the game's initial lead with a four-run second inning that included a two-run Mustang throwing error.
After leading the bases loaded in the top of the second, Cal Poly responded with two runs in the third with Maddie Amos contributing a run-scoring double and Martin plating Jeffries with a sacrifice fly.
The Mustangs then surged ahead 5-4 with a three-run fourth as Maddie Amos produced a two-run double and Lily Amos placed Cal Poly in front with an RBI single.
UC Santa Barbara, however, surged back with three runs during the bottom half of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double from Fines.
Still trailing 7-5 heading into the sixth, Cal Poly cut UC Santa Barbara's lead to a single run after senior second baseman Sarah Wulff drew a one-out, bases-loaded walk to force home sophomore pinch runner Juju Sargent. Gauchos reliever Lexi Campbell then retired the next two spots in Cal Poly's lineup to preserve her side's one-run lead.
Cal Poly was then retired in order during the seventh to close the game.
Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara complete the three-game series with a 1 p.m. matchup on Saturday, April 3.
