Mustangs Look to Climb Big West Standings at UC Santa Barbara April 2-3

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Closing its lengthiest road stretch of the season, the Cal Poly softball program visits Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara for a Friday, April 2 doubleheader and Saturday, April 3 single matchup.

First pitch from Campus Diamond is 1 p.m. both afternoons for Cal Poly (8-8, 3-3), which opened its current six-game road trip by dropping two of three matchups at UC Riverside (March 27-28). Cal Poly enters the UC Santa Barbara series trailing second-place Long Beach State (9-5, 5-1) by two games in the Big West Conference standings and third-place Hawai'i (4-5, 4-2) by one.
UC Santa Barbara (5-18, 2-4), meanwhile, is one of three programs trailing Cal Poly by a single game in the standings after the Gauchos fell three times during their four-game, March 26-27 series at UC San Diego (any scheduled fourth game in a series does not count toward the standings).
Including a 1-0 loss at UC Riverside (March 28) to close the series against the Highlanders, eight of Cal Poly's 16 games this season have been decided by one run with the Mustangs holding a 3-5 record in those decisions.
Offensively, senior center fielder Noellah Ramos continues to lead Cal Poly with a .370 (20-for-54) batting average and owns two of the four three-hit games by a Mustang this season. One of five Mustangs to start all 16 games, Ramos has hit safely 13 times.
Senior designated player Shelby Jeffries, sixth among Big West players with 13 RBI, is batting .360 (18-for-50). Sophomore shortstop Xiara Diaz follows with a .333 (11-for-33) mark while junior infielder Maddie Amos – Cal Poly's co-leader alongside Jeffries with four doubles and 25 total bases – is hitting .327 (16-for-49).
Following the UC Santa Barbara matchups, Cal Poly plays two of its ensuing three Big West series at home, starting with a four-game, April 9-10 series against Hawai'i. The series gets underway with a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 9.
