
Mustangs Rout UC Irvine, 64-46, for First Conference Win

IRVINE, Calif. – Cal Poly led wire to wire with three players scoring in double figures led by sophomore Ariana Elegado in the 64-46 win over UC Irvine in a Big West Conference game on Saturday. With the win Cal Poly improves to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in Big West games while UCI falls to 4-10 overall and 0-2 in conference games.
Cal Poly will return to the court on Jan. 10 when the team will host UC Davis at 7 pm in Mott Gym.
Elegado scored a team-high 20 points when she hit seven of 14 shots from the floor including six of nine from long range. Her all-around game included four rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. Brittany Woodard added 15 points hitting six of eight from the floor with Molly Schlemer scoring 10 points when she connected on five of seven field goals.
Woodard, Schlemer and Jonae Ervin each grabbed seven boards to lead the team. Kyla Griffin recorded five assists to lead Cal Poly as the team shot 46 percent from the floor and made eight of 19 from long range. The Mustangs corralled 45 rebounds while turning the ball over 18 times with 19 assists.
UCI was led by Jasmine Bernard off the bench with 13 points as the Anteaters shot 28 percent from the floor and made just four of 17 from long range. UCI had just 32 rebounds while turning the ball over 18 times.
UCI went to the line 21 times and made 12 while Cal Poly went to the line just four times, making two.
The Mustangs jumped to a 9-0 lead in the first three minute s of the game and forcing a UCI timeout. Woodard accounted for seven of the points. With the flurry of points by the Mustangs to open the game, it would be another four minutes until the next basket when Nikol Allison would make a jumper with 13:08 on the clock.
Cal Poly held a 15-2 advantage at the second media timeout (11:50) on a layup by Woodard and made it 18-4 on an Elegado three with 10:33 left in the half. The Mustangs held an 18 point lead with 7:02 left on the clock on another three by Elegado.
Cal Poly held its largest lead in the half (21 points) on Elegado's fifth three of the half and settled for a 36-15 lead at the break. Elegado led the team with 15 points as Woodard accounted for 11. Cal Poly shot 48 percent from the floor including six of 12 from long range.
The second half opened like the first period with Cal Poly opening up a 30 point lead (47-17) less than five minutes into the final period (15:52). At the midway point of the half, Cal Poly held a 56-26 lead on a Schlemer jumper (10:26).
With five minutes left in the game (4:57), UCI had cut the lead to 62-38 (24 points) and to 21 points (62-41) with 2:22 left with the Mustangs settling for a 64-46 win.
