SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Freshman Dulci Vail and sophomore Nora Perez each scored in double figures, but Cal Poly women’s basketball fell at home Saturday to second place UC San Diego, 85-61.
Vail finished with 14 points while Perez had 12 points. Sophomore guard Vanessa McManus added nine points. Cal Poly shot 46 percent from the field. However, the Mustangs committed 20 turnovers which the Tritons turned into 19 points.
UC San Diego used a balanced attack with six players scoring at least seven points, including four in double figures.
It was a close first quarter with the Mustangs trailing by seven heading into the second. However, things changed in the second quarter as the Tritons outscored Cal Poly 27-15 to take a 45-26 lead at the break.
The Mustangs bounced back in the second half, cutting the deficit down to 15. However, that’s as close as they would get at any point in the half.
Cal Poly will play its final two games of the season next week. They will host UC Irvine Thursday, March 5 at 6 p.m. before finishing on the road at Cal State Bakersfield Saturday at 2 p.m.
