BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Cal Poly women’s basketball finished its season strong Saturday, taking down Cal State Bakersfield on the road 66-54.
Freshman forward Charish Thompson solidified her case for Big West Freshman of the Year after leading the Mustangs with 19 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Vanessa McManus and sophomore forward Nora Perez each added 11 points.
The story for the Mustangs was their defense as they held the Roadrunners less than 33 percent shooting from the field and outrebounded them by 10.
After a close first quarter in which Cal Poly led 13-10 heading to the second. The Mustangs opened the second with an 11-3 run to push their lead to 11. Cal Poly continued to pour it on and held a 15 point lead at halftime.
In the third, Cal State Bakersfield cut it down to eight midway through the quarter before the Mustangs pushed the lead to 18. Cal Poly led by as much as 20 in the fourth before the Roadrunners cut it to 10 late in the game but the Mustangs held on.
Cal Poly, the youngest team in all of Division I this year, finishes the season 4-26 overall and 2-18 in Big West play. However, with plenty of young talent that were just freshmen and sophomores this season, the Mustangs have the ability to return all 16 players from the roster next year.
