
Woodard's Career-High Leads Cal Poly Past UC Davis, 73-71

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Senior Brittany Woodard scored a career-high 21 points while the defense shut down any attempt of a last second game tying shot in Cal Poly's 73-71 Big West Conference win over the visiting Aggies of UC Davis on Thursday in Mott Gym. With the win the Mustangs improve to 2-1 in Big West play and 8-6 overall while UCD falls to 0-2 in conference games and 5-8 overall.
The Mustangs will return to the court on Saturday when the team will host Pacific in the Big West game with tip scheduled for 4 pm.
Woodard's career-high came when she connected on nine of 17 shots from the floor including a three-pointer. Woodard's previous best was 18 points against Stephan F. Austin on Nov. 23. Her all-around game included eight rebounds, two assists with a block and a steal. Sophomore Ariana Elegado added 16 points when she connected on five of 10 from long range while adding five assists. Junior Molly Schlemer came off the bench to become the third Mustang in double figures with 12 points when she made five of seven shots from the floor.
In the second half the Mustangs held a 10 point lead (64-54) with 7:22 left in the game when UCD used a 15-7 run to cut the lead to two (71-69) with 1:43 on the clock when Ervin drove for a layup on the next Cal Poly possession and gave the Mustangs a four point advantage (73-69) with 18 seconds left on the clock.
After a pair of free throws by Shinoda pulled UCD within two with 11 seconds left, the Aggies fouled Ervin, who missed the front end of a one and one. UCD advanced the ball up the court, but could not get a look at the basket as time expired without getting a shot off.
