SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Senior Brittany Woodard scored a career-high 21 points while the defense shut down any attempt of a last second game tying shot in Cal Poly's 73-71 Big West Conference win over the visiting Aggies of UC Davis on Thursday in Mott Gym. With the win the Mustangs improve to 2-1 in Big West play and 8-6 overall while UCD falls to 0-2 in conference games and 5-8 overall.

The Mustangs will return to the court on Saturday when the team will host Pacific in the Big West game with tip scheduled for 4 pm.

Woodard's career-high came when she connected on nine of 17 shots from the floor including a three-pointer. Woodard's previous best was 18 points against Stephan F. Austin on Nov. 23. Her all-around game included eight rebounds, two assists with a block and a steal. Sophomore Ariana Elegado added 16 points when she connected on five of 10 from long range while adding five assists. Junior Molly Schlemer came off the bench to become the third Mustang in double figures with 12 points when she made five of seven shots from the floor.

Senior Nikol Allison, earning her second start of the season, led the team with nine rebounds while adding eight points. Junior Jonae Ervin also added eight points while dishing out a team-high six assists.

Cortney French led all scorers with 26 points when she made 10 of 13 shots from the floor and six of eight from long range. Sydnee Fipps added 17 points for UCD with Blair Shinoda scoring 14 points.

UC Davis outshot the Mustangs, 51 percent to 45 percent with each team connecting for eight 3-pointers. Cal Poly outrebounded UCD, 36-25, with 15 coming on the offensive end of the court. Cal Poly handed out 20 assists in the game while turning the ball over just 14 times. UCD had 11 assists with 17 turnovers.

In the first half, UCD opened up 14-8 lead with seven minutes into the game (12:24), but the Mustangs used a 13-0 run to make up a four point deficit and take a nine point lead with 6:55 on the clock. The run opened with a three pointer by senior Kayla Griffin followed by a three by Elegado on the next possession. Allison added a layup and the run was capped by another three by Elegado.

Cal Poly hit its first double figure lead, 36-26, on Woodard's three pointer (3:40) and held its largest lead of the half, 13 points, with 30 seconds left in the period. The Mustangs settled for a 43-32 lead at the break.

In the second half the Mustangs held a 10 point lead (64-54) with 7:22 left in the game when UCD used a 15-7 run to cut the lead to two (71-69) with 1:43 on the clock when Ervin drove for a layup on the next Cal Poly possession and gave the Mustangs a four point advantage (73-69) with 18 seconds left on the clock.

After a pair of free throws by Shinoda pulled UCD within two with 11 seconds left, the Aggies fouled Ervin, who missed the front end of a one and one. UCD advanced the ball up the court, but could not get a look at the basket as time expired without getting a shot off.
