Thompson Records 22 Points in Mustang Loss to Hawai’i

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Freshman Charish Thompson recorded her sixth game of the season scoring over 20 points, but the Cal Poly women’s basketball team came up short at home Thursday to Hawai’i, 71-54.
Thompson finished with a game high 22 points and four rebounds. It’s her sixth straight game in a row scoring in double figures. Sophomore forward Avery Knapp scored a career high 13 points while sophomore guard Vanessa McManus finished with 10 points.
The Rainbow Wahine had four players in double figures. They shot 47 percent from the field as a team and scored 39 points off the Mustangs’ 20 turnovers.
Cal Poly started the game off well, getting out to a 6-0 lead. However, with the Mustangs leading 14-7, Hawai’i went on a 12-0 run over the final four minutes of the first to lead 19-14 heading into the second. That run continued into the second quarter as the Rainbow Wahine scored eight unanswered points to start the second and take a 27-14 lead. The Mustangs were able to finish the half on an 8-0 run to make it 33-24 at the half.
In the third, Hawai’i extended its lead to as much as 21. Cal Poly was able to get it down to as little as 13 later. Hawai’i started the fourth on a 15-0 run to pull away for good the rest of the game.
The Mustangs will be off until next Thursday, Feb. 26 when they hit the road to face Long Beach State at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
