NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Three Mustangs scored in double figures, but a 26 point second half point advantage by CSUN saw Cal Poly women’s basketball fall on the road to the Matadors Thursday, 65-50.
Freshman forward Charish Thompson led the Mustangs (3-19, 1-11 BW) with 18 points and seven rebounds. Freshman forward Dulci Vail finished with 12 points while sophomore guard Vanessa McManus had 11 points.
It was a strong first half for Cal Poly with Charish Thompson scoring 10 in the opening half as the Mustangs shot 41 percent from the field while limiting CSUN to just 18 percent first half shooting to lead it 26-15 at halftime.
In the third, Cal Poly came out of halftime very strong, extending its lead to as much as 16 at 33-17. However, the Matadors outscored the Mustangs 25-15 for the quarter to get back within one at 41-40 heading to the fourth.
The Matadors slowly extended their lead in the fourth, outscoring the Mustangs 25-9 in the quarter. It was largely due to Cal Poly committing turnovers against the press of CSUN. The Mustangs had 32 turnovers for the game which CSUN turned into 28 points.
The Mustangs return home Saturday to face UC Davis at 2 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
