
Mustangs Drop Close Contest to UC Davis

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Freshman forward Charish Thompson recorded her fifth game of at least 20 points, but the Cal Poly women’s basketball team fell in a close contest with UC Davis at home Saturday, 59-55.
Thompson, going against former Big West Defensive Player of the Year Megan Norris, led the Mustangs with 20 points and eight rebounds. She had 16 of those points in the first half. Junior guard Alana Goosby added eight points, four rebounds, and four assists.
The Aggies were led by guard Ryane Bennett’s 20 points. Norris added eight points and 15 rebounds.
It was a tight game throughout against the Aggies, who are third in the Big West standings. Neither team ever led by more than seven. Cal Poly shot better than UC Davis from the field overall. However, UC Davis made six more threes than the Mustangs.
Cal Poly had a very strong first quarter, outscoring UC Davis 16-12. However, the Aggies won the second quarter, 22-11, to take a 34-27 lead at halftime.
In the third, Cal Poly rallied to tie it 42-42 late in the quarter. The Aggies started the fourth by taking a 48-42 lead. The Mustangs then came back to get within two at 50-48 with four minutes left. Later down 55-53 with one minute left, Arissa Garcia drove into the lane and put in a layup to tie it at 55.
UC Davis then made a three with nine seconds left to go up 58-55. Cal Poly missed a shot on its next possession to seal the game for the Aggies.
The Mustangs go on the road next week for two games. Thursday, Feb. 12 they will take on UC Irvine at 6 p.m.
