Mustangs Outlast UIC Sunday in 10-Inning Victory

SAN JOSE – Junior third baseman Mylina Garza capped a four-run 10th-inning with a two-run double for the Cal Poly softball program Sunday morning as the Mustangs closed Silicon Valley Classic I action with a 7-4 victory against UIC.
Senior starting righthander Paige Maier (1-2) struck out five in going the distance for Cal Poly (2-8), which led 3-1 heading into the bottom half of the seventh. The Flames, however, scored twice to force extra innings with center fielder Dee Dee Caskey first delivering a two-out, run-scoring triple before coming around herself on a Mustang fielding error.
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect to begin the top of the eighth inning, Maier twice stranded a pair of UIC baserunners to complete the eighth and ninth.
Cal Poly freshman Natalie Camarena started the 10th on second before second baseman Aly Barrios singled and left fielder Maddy Bermudez drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Senior catcher Julia Barnett then singled to bring home sophomore pinch runner Sehren Martinez before a throwing error from Caskey in center field plated Barrios.
Garza then followed with her two-run double to hand Cal Poly the 7-3 lead.
Maier (above), who scattered eight hits and stranded 11 total baserunners, conceded a two-out run in the bottom half of the 10th before inducing a game-ending groundout from designated player Sequoia Sanchez.
Cal Poly notched Sunday's opening run at the first opportunity as Bermudez followed junior center fielder Kiara Blanchard's leadoff walk with a run-scoring triple.
A Bermudez groundout helped score Cal Poly's second run in the third. UIC halved the lead in the fourth before Blanchard increased the advantage to 3-1 with a fifth-inning double.
Cal Poly returns home to host Sacramento State for a three-game, Feb. 22-23 series at Bob Janssen Field. Action gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 22.
