SAN LUIS OBISPO – Two weeks into the season and already just two weekends of Big West preparation remaining for the Cal Poly softball program, which welcomes Sacramento State to Bob Janssen Field for a three-game, Feb. 22-23 series. Action opens with a 1 p.m. doubleheader and concludes with an 11 a.m. single matchup for Cal Poly (2-8), which resumes action after closing the Santa Clara/San Jose State-hosted Silicon Valley Classic I with a 7-4, 10-inning victory against UIC (Feb. 16). Sacramento State (6-4), making its first visit to Cal Poly since the 2015 Mustang Classic, closed a six-game run at Hawai’i's Feb. 13-15 Spring Fling with three successive setbacks.

CAL POLY VERSUS SACRAMENTO STATE:Cal Poly has won six of the last nine matchups with Sacramento State since 2013 – including edging the Hornets, 1-0, as part of a Feb. 9, 2024 opening day doubleheader. Cal Poly leads the all-time series, 44-39, dating to the first matchup on April 30, 1976.
BARNETT ADDS OFFENSE TO THE RESUME: The reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Year honoree, senior catch Julia Barnett has emerged as Cal Poly’s top hitter after the opening two weekends, leading the Mustangs with a .394 (13-for-33) batting average and, among conference players, ranking second with four doubles, fifth with 13 hits and 20 total bases and sixth with nine RBI. Having hit safely in eight of 10 games – including swatting her second career home run during a Feb. 8 home matchup with Oregon State – Barnett also leads Cal Poly with four multi-hit games and three multi-RBI games A starter in all 97 games since the start of the 2023 season, Barnett is a .989 career fielder with just seven errors in 632 total chances.
BERMUDEZ BREAKS OUT: Hitting safely in eight of her first 10 collegiate games, freshman left fielder Maddy Bermudez enters Cal Poly’s Feb. 22 doubleheader with Sacramento State as the program’s second leading hitter with a .333 (10-for-30) batting average. Also Cal Poly’s leader with six runs, Bermudez takes a five-game hitting streak into the weekend.
CONDON ON THE VERGE OF MORE HISTORY: The winningest female head coach in university history, Jenny Condon requires just 21 more Mustang victories to become only the fifth head coach in Big West history to reach 500 career wins. Cal Poly’s April 12 doubleheader opening matchup at UC Riverside will also mark Condon’s 1,000th career game – a figure reached by just two previous Big West head coaches. A four-time Big West Coach of the Year honoree, Condon ranks sixth in conference history with both 479 total victories and 206 Big West wins.
CAL POLY SELECTED FIFTH IN BIG WEST PRESEASON POLL: A year after finishing third in the Big West standings with an 18-8 mark, Cal Poly was selected for a fifth-place finish during the 2025 season following the Jan. 30 release of the conference preseason coaches’ poll. The Mustangs earned 45 points to finish seven votes shy of Hawai’i. Long Beach State, last season’s Big West runner-up, took top spot in the poll with 81 total points and nine of 10 first-place votes. Defending champion Cal State Fullerton earned 63 points and the remaining first-place vote. UC Santa Barbara was third on 59 points.
LOOKING AHEAD (FEB. 28-MARCH 2): Cal Poly completes Big West preparations with four matchups at Long Beach State’s Louisville Slugger Invitational, opening action Friday, Feb. 28 against Pitt (9 a.m.). Play continues Saturday, March 1 against first-time foes Omaha (9 a.m.) and Utah Tech (2 p.m.). Cal Poly concludes play at LBSU Softball Complex on Sunday, March 2 against Loyola Marymount (11:30 a.m.).
