Mustangs Drop Saturday Pair to Sacramento State

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior right fielder Kiara Blanchard paced the Cal Poly softball program with two hits and senior catcher Julia Barnett supplied an RBI single, but the Mustangs opened a Saturday doubleheader and three-game series against Sacramento State with an 8-1 setback at Bob Janssen Field. Cal Poly also dropped Saturday's second game after Sacramento State's seven-run fifth inning helped close out a 12-0, run-rule decision.
During Saturday's opening matchup, Sacramento State (8-4) converted three doubles during the top half of the first into four runs and exited the initial inning with the 4-0 lead. The Hornets then added three more runs in the second, scoring without a hit through a bases-loaded walk, fielder's choice and Cal Poly throwing error.
Taking over in the circle for Cal Poly with one out during the top of the first, righthanded reliever Ally Robbins retired the Hornets in order in the third and fourth.
Offensively, Cal Poly was kept to a solitary single and just one baserunner in scoring position through the initial five innings by Sacramento State starting lefthander Caroline Evans (3-1). The Mustangs, however, grabbed a run back during the bottom half of the sixth as Barnett followed Blanchard's leadoff double with a run-scoring single.
Sacramento State then finalized the scoreline with a final run in the top half of the seventh for the 8-1 win.
During Saturday's second matchup, Mustang starting senior righthander Paige Maier (1-3) retired Sacramento State in order during the top half of the first before the Hornets surged ahead in the second with Evans supplying a run-scoring double ahead of catcher Shannon Garcia's RBI triple. First baseman Malissa George then ran the lead to 3-0, scoring on a Cal Poly throwing error.
The Mustangs stranded three of their seven baserunners to end the second before Sacramento State went up 5-0 in the fourth through a two-run double by right fielder Katie Marsh.
Sacramento State then closed the scoring with the seven-run fifth inning en route to the run-rule victory.
Cal Poly and Sacramento State complete the three-game series with an 11 a.m. matchup on Sunday, Feb. 23.
