SAN JOSE – A two-run double from senior catcher Julia Barnett (above) coupled with a San Jose State fielding error handed the Cal Poly softball team a third-inning lead during game No. 2 of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader at San Jose State, but the Spartans responded with a three-run third to regain the advantage en route to a 6-4 decision. Earlier Saturday at the Silicon Valley Classic I, Cal Poly dropped its opener to San Jose State, 6-0.
During Saturday's opening 6-0 defeat, San Jose State struck for the decisive runs with four in the second inning highlighted by second baseman Reina Zermeno's two-run double to left center.
Offensively for Cal Poly, San Jose State starting righthander Mia Reynolds (2-3) retired the first 10 Mustangs faced before freshman left fielder Maddy Bermudez singled with one down in the top half of the fourth. Barnett followed with a second base hit and the pair both advanced into scoring position through junior third baseman Mylina Garza's foul out. Freshman designated player Natalie Camarena, however, grounded out to end Cal Poly's best scoring opportunity of the matchup.
The Spartans added their final two runs in the sixth with shortstop Ahmiya Noriega producing a run-scoring triple before Zermeno supplied an RBI single.
During Saturday's second matchup, Mustang junior center fielder Kiara Blanchard led off the game with a double, but the Mustangs were kept scoreless and San Jose State notched the opening two during the bottom half of the first.
Held to just Blanchard's double through the initial two innings, Cal Poly took the lead with a three-run third. With Blanchard on first, Bermudez on second and one down, Barnett doubled to right center to tie the matchup. Garza followed with a single before Camarena reached on a fielding error by Noriega at shortstop – a miscue that brought Barnett around for a 3-2 Cal Poly advantage.
Handed the lead in the circle, Camarena (1-3) kept San Jose State scoreless in the third before the Spartans regained their advantage in the fourth, first loading the bases with one down before Zermeno was hit by a pitch. Matchup tied, left fielder Haley Reeve followed with a run-scoring single.
With Cal Poly now trailing, 4-3, senior righthander Paige Maier took over for Camarena and Spartans center fielder Aubrie Thomas added another RBI base hit as San Jose State exited the fourth inning with a 5-3 edge.
San Jose State then added another run in the fifth to go up 6-3.
After stranding two baserunners in the sixth, Cal Poly grabbed one more run back in the seventh as Barnett followed a leadoff triple by Bermudez with a run-scoring single.
