SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Coming off a road win at UC San Diego last weekend, Cal Poly women's basketball returns home this Saturday to host Cal State Bakersfield.
The Mustangs (8-8, 4-2 BW) will host the Roadrunners (4-10, 1-4 BW) at 2 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center. The game will air live on ESPN+. Links to that as well as live stats can be found on the schedule page.
Last week, Cal Poly split a pair of games, falling at home to UC Riverside before taking down the Tritons on the road.
In the win over UC San Diego, the Mustangs held them to 39 points, the fewest they've allowed in a game this season, while also limiting them to 28 percent shooting.
Junior guard Sydney Bourland scored 15 points in the game, tying a career high.
They are currently third in the Big West standings at 4-2. UCSB stands at the top at 5-1 while Hawai'i is second at 4-1.
Junior guard Annika Shah continues to lead the Mustangs in scoring at 11.9 points per game which ranks 10th in the Big West. She's also one of the top free throw shooters in the league and is 24-25 on the year.
Also having a big year for the Mustangs has been senior forward Natalia Ackerman, who is second on the team in scoring at 11.1 points per game. She also leads the team in rebounds at 7.9 per game which ranks fifth in the Big West. She also leads the league in blocks at 2.1 per game and field goal percentage at 55.2 percent.
As a team in solely conference games, the Mustangs are leading the conference in offensive rebounds at 13.3 per game. They are also second in blocks.
The Mustangs have been doing this all with a very new and young team. There are nine newcomers to the team with just four returners. The four returners are Shah, Ackerman, redshirt freshman Sierra Lichtie, and junior guard Sydney Bourland. The nine newcomers consist of four Division I transfers and five true freshmen.
Following Saturday's game against the Roadrunners, Cal Poly face Cal State Fullerton next Thursday on the road before returning home to host Hawai'i Saturday.
SCOUTING CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD: The Roadrunners come into the week on a four-game losing streak. Two players, Shaunae Brown and Jordan Olivares combine for 47 percent of their scoring. Brown leads the Big West and ranks ninth in the country in threes made per game at 3.14.
