Ackerman’s 29 Points Lift Cal Poly to Win Over CSU Bakersfield

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior forward Natalia Ackerman couldn't be stopped offensively as she dropped a career-high 29 points Saturday to propel Cal Poly women's basketball to an 80-67 home win over Cal State Bakersfield.
Ackerman, the Big West's leader in field goal percentage, was an incredibly efficient 11-13 from the field in 26 minutes. She also had 13 rebounds to notch her fifth double-double of the season. Two other Mustangs (9-8, 5-2 BW) also scored in double figures as junior guard Annika Shah finished with 14 points while graduate guard Ania McNicholas added 10 points.
"My teammates were hyping me up, getting me the ball," Ackerman said after her best collegiate game. "Today was really special."
The Mustangs' defense was tough all game as they forced the Roadrunners into 21 turnovers. They also capitalized on their free throws, going 22-25 for the game.
Cal Poly jumped out of the gates strong, making five of its first six shots. It was a tight, back-and-forth first quarter as the Roadrunners (4-12, 1-6 BW) held a one-point lead heading into the second.
Cal State Bakersfield led it 31-29 with 4:30 left in the first half before the Mustangs finished the half on a 7-2 run to lead it 36-33.
The Mustangs used tough defense to go on a 6-0 run in the first 80 seconds of the second half to push their lead up to nine. From there, Cal Poly was able to extend its lead up to 12 with three minutes left in the third.
The Mustangs never let up in the fourth, taking a lead as much as 18 with four minutes to go.
Cal Poly now finds itself in a tie for third place in the Big West standings at 5-2 with UC Irvine. They will now go back on the road next Thursday to face Cal State Fullerton before returning home Saturday to host second place Hawai'i.
