Three Score in Double Figures to Lead Mustangs Past Titans
1/25/2024 10:13:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FULLERTON, Calif. — Led by junior guard Annika Shah's 18 points, three Mustangs finished in double figures as Cal Poly tied a season-high in field goal percentage to take down Cal State Fullerton on the road Thursday night, 68-55.
The win propels the Mustangs (10-8, 6-2 BW) into a three-way tie for second place in the Big West standings with UC Irvine and Hawai'i – who the Mustangs will host at Mott Athletics Center Saturday.
Shah was a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line and was 2-3 from three to pace Cal Poly, who shot 59 percent from the field for the game which matched its highest percentage in a game this season.
Redshirt freshman forward Sierra Lichtie was a perfect 4-4 from the field as she finished with 10 points and a team-leading nine rebounds. Senior forward Natalia Ackerman notched her 13th double figure scoring game of the season after adding 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Titans (7-11, 3-5 BW) got off strong in the first quarter, scoring the first six points of the game and led it 19-12 heading into the second.
Cal Poly flipped the script in the second, opening the quarter on a 14-2 run over the first six minutes to take a 26-21 lead. The Mustangs held the lead for the remainder of the half, leading it 28-25 at the break.
In the third, Cal State Fullerton got within one at 31-30 before the Mustangs answered with an 12-3 run to go up by 10. The Titans were able to trim the deficit down to five heading into the fourth quarter after finishing the third on a 5-0 run over the final minute.
The Titans made it 46-44 with eight minutes left in the game but that is as close as they got the rest the way as six straight points from the Mustangs pushed the lead back up to eight at 52-44 with seven minutes left. From there, Cal State Fullerton never got closer than within six as Cal Poly held them off the rest of the way.
The Mustangs will now turn their focus to a big game on Saturday against Hawai'i at 2 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center. A win would put Cal Poly in a tie for first place in the Big West standings with UC Santa Barbara.
