Cal Poly's Late Comeback Bid Comes up Just Short Saturday Against Hawai’i
1/27/2024 7:28:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Three Mustangs scored in double figures and Cal Poly cut a 13-point fourth quarter deficit down to one in the late stages but came up just short to Hawai'i Saturday at home, falling 63-59.
Junior guard Sydney Bourland led the Mustangs (10-9, 6-3 BW) offensively as she matched a career-high with 15 points. Fellow junior guard Sidney Richards was a perfect 5-5 from the field and finished with 11 points off the bench. Meanwhile, senior forward Natalia Ackerman once again scored in double figures, finishing with 10 points and a team-leading eight rebounds.
After getting down 13 with six minutes left in the game, Cal Poly mounted a comeback as they went on a 9-0 run in just over a minute to cut Hawai'i's lead down to four.
The Rainbow Wahine (10-9, 7-2 BW) went back up 58-50 with 2:30 left but the Mustangs fought back once again. An 8-2 run by Cal Poly got them back within a basket at 60-58 with 45 seconds left. After getting defensive stop, redshirt freshman forward Sierra Lichtie was fouled on a shot attempt with 10 seconds remaining. She made one of two free throws however to still trail Hawai'i 60-59.
The Mustangs were forced to send the Rainbow Wahine to the free throw line, where they were 20-22 for the game, and made one of two to go up by two. Cal Poly junior guard Annika Shah then missed what would have been a game winning three with two seconds left came up short.
The Mustangs were able to bounce back from a tough shooting first quarter where they shot 25 percent, shooting 55 percent the remaining three quarters and ended up shooting 48 percent for the game.
In addition to capitalizing on its chances from the free throw line, Hawai'i, who also had three players score in double figures, turned 20 Cal Poly turnovers into 22 points.
The Mustangs, who now sit tied for fourth in the Big West standings with UC Davis, will go back on the road next week for a pair of road games. They will take on first place UC Irvine Thursday at 6 p.m. before facing UC Davis Saturday at 2 p.m.
