Mustangs Sustain 2-0 Saturday Setback at UC Santa Barbara
9/23/2023 10:11:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SANTA BARBARA – Goals from UC Santa Barbara forward Nicolas Willumsen in the 18th minute and midfielder Nalu Mack in the 54th marked the difference Saturday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer program completed Big West preparations with 2-0, non-conference setback to the rival Gauchos inside Harder Stadium.
Graduate goalkeeper Justin Siegel finished with two saves for Cal Poly (2-4-1), which saw all three of its second-half shots on target turned away by UC Santa Barbara goalkeeper Leroy Zeller.
"The guys were pushing right at the end," first-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "It's been a tough week, with the travel we've had (playing at Gonzaga on Wednesday). We had just as many chances tonight and outshot them in the second half. The guys really pushed and pushed."
Saturday's attendance figure of 7,032 marked the second highest NCAA Division I crowd this season and matched the 66th highest regular season attendance figure in NCAA history.
With the Big West's 10 member programs playing each other just once on a yearly rotating home-and-away basis, Saturday's meeting was scheduled as a non-conference matchup. The countable game for the Big West standings between Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara this season occurs on Sunday, Oct. 15 in San Luis Obispo.
Cal Poly returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 27, opening its 22nd season of Big West action when hosting UC Davis at 7 p.m.
"As we've talked about all year, this is all leading into conference (play)," Kennedy said. "We're excited about Wednesday and getting to start that next journey in the season. There's so many growth moments that the guys had tonight and have had throughout the course of the season and we're excited to get back (home).
"I think we gave a good accounting of ourselves tonight, but we're not here to make up the numbers. We've got to keep pushing and I think we'll be ready for conference Wednesday."
Opening the scoring in the 18th minute, UC Santa Barbara defender Jorge Aldana flicked a pass from the end line back near the top of the Mustang penalty area. Gauchos forward Alexis Ledoux then headed down for Willumsen, who found the back of Cal Poly's net with the first shot on target of the evening.
Cal Poly, meanwhile was held without a shot until junior forward Jackson Kestler (above) fired a 20th-minute attempt over the crossbar. Freshman midfielder Rylan Firouznam saw a 27th-minute attempt blocked before junior captain Nate Colley also went over the crossbar in the 30th.
Into the second half, Siegel briefly preserved Cal Poly's one-goal disadvantage with his first save of the night in the 53rd. A minute later, however, Siegel punched away a corner kick into the path of Mack with the ball ricocheting off UC Santa Barbara's midfielder and over the goal line.
Facing the two-goal deficit, Cal Poly had attempts from Kestler gloved away by Zeller in the 58th and 65th before freshman midfielder Diego Guerra was stopped on 71 minutes.
