IRVINE – UC Irvine midfielder Isaiahs Gutierrez’s goal 26 seconds from full-time decided Wednesday’s non-conference matchup as the Cal Poly men’s soccer program sustained a 1-0 setback at Anteater Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Ben Oetman finished with three saves in his Cal Poly debut for the Mustangs (6-5-4), who maintained the stalemate until the final minute, when defender Mathew Miranda served a ball from the center circle for midfielder James Arteaga, who headed down for Gutierrez.
Gutierrez then fired past Oetman from the center of goal for the decisive strike.
Maintaining 58 percent possession Wednesday, Cal Poly forced UC Irvine goalkeeper Scott Williams into saves in the 24th (sophomore defender Michael Baumgaertel, above) and 69th (junior forward Roman Anast) minutes without finding the breakthrough.
