SAN LUIS OBISPO – Two UC Riverside goals 79 seconds apart early during the second half decided Saturday evening’s regular season finale as the Cal Poly men’s soccer program – requiring a win to qualify for the Pac-12 Tournament – dropped a 2-0 decision to the Highlanders to close the regular season on senior night.
UC Riverside (2-2-2, 5-7-5), entering play Saturday with five points in the table alongside Cal Poly (6-7-5, 1-3-2), leapfrogged both San Diego State and UC San Diego to secure the No. 3 seed for the Nov. 7 and 13 Pac-12 Tournament and will face crosstown foe California Baptist in Saturday’s opening round. Regular season champion Oregon State hosts San Diego State in the other semifinal.
Each goalkeeper was required to make a solitary first-half save Saturday before UC Riverside broke the stalemate on 53 minutes after Mustang sophomore defender Tanner Casey brought down Highlanders forward Adrian Diaz inside the penalty area. Midfielder Tarek Hamideh stepped to the spot and converted his penalty attempt in the bottom left corner of the Mustang net and past goalkeeper Dylan Glowaski for the 1-0 lead.
Just over a minute later, a clearance from Glowaski fell short for Highlanders forward Wyatt Ponting, who dribbled on goal and fired at the left post to double UC Riverside’s advantage.
Cal Poly outshot UC Riverside, 13-8, but tested Highlanders goalkeeper Giancarlo Sagredo just twice in the second half with midfielder Rylan Firouznam turned away in the 46th minute and forward Charlie Hogan stopped seven minutes from full time.
