Mustangs Drop Road Matchup of Blue-Green Rivalry, 3-1
10/10/2026 11:47:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SANTA BARBARA – Junior forward Devin Bening scored his fourth goal of the season to tie for the team lead, but the Cal Poly men’s soccer program – despite forcing UC Santa Barbara goalkeeper Owen Beninga into seven saves – fell at UC Santa Barbara Saturday evening, 3-1.
In front of 11,186 fans at Harder Stadium – the largest NCAA men’s crowd this season and narrowly surpassing the 11,075 that saw Cal Poly defeat the Gauchos at home on Sept. 25 – UC Santa Barbara took a 2-0 lead inside 23 minutes through goals from midfielder Steinar Bjornsson and forward Zac Siebenlist.
UC Santa Barbara midfielder Kaden Standish’s 40th-minute goal then handed the hosts a 3-0 lead at the break.
Beninga was at six saves before turning away junior midfielder Diego Guerra on 85 minutes. The rebound though fell to Bening, who fired past Beninga at the right post. Bening’s fourth goal of 2026 ties junior forward Colin Pearce for the team lead.
Cal Poly (4-4-5) returns home for its next two matches, first hosting Utah Valley for a Wednesday, Oct. 14 non-conference matchup. Kickoff on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
