Mustangs Outlasted by UC Davis in Big West Opener, 1-0

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly men's soccer program kept UC Davis to just one shot on target during Wednesday evening's Big West opener, but a 26th-minute goal from Aggies forward Declan Horio marked the difference as the Mustangs sustained a 1-0 setback at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
Each side held the other shotless until the 26th, when a lengthy pass from Aggies goalkeeper Charles Janssen from inside his own penalty area was headed forward by Cason Goodman 30 yards from goal. Horio collected the ball and dribbled on goal before bettering Cal Poly graduate goalkeeper Just Siegel.
Cal Poly (2-5-1, 0-0-1) placed four of its five shots on frame. Three of those efforts came during the final 11 minutes with freshman midfielder Ollie Hemlin (above) turned away by Janssen in the 79th before junior forward Jackson Kestler was stopped in the 88th and 89th.
Cal Poly resumes Big West action when visiting defending Big West Tournament champion UC Riverside on Saturday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is 7 p.m. om ESPN+.
