Cal Poly Settles for 1-1 Saturday Draw at UC Riverside
9/30/2023 10:10:00 PM | Men's Soccer
RIVERSIDE – Freshman midfielder Rylan Firouznam's 12th-minute opening goal was cancelled out 10 minutes from halftime by UC Riverside defender Aleksander Vukovic as the Cal Poly men's soccer program's Saturday visit to UCR Soccer Stadium finished in a 1-1 draw.
"We're proud of the how we competed tonight on the road against a team that are better than their results have been this season," said first-year Mustang head coach Oige Kennedy of defending Big West Tournament champion UC Riverside (0-7-3, 0-1-1). "They have a lot of older experienced guys that were part of their conference title last season."
Graduate goalkeeper Justin Siegel recorded four saves for Cal Poly (2-5-2, 0-1-1), which earned its initial Big West point of the season Saturday after scoring with its first shot attempt of the night. Graduate defender Emory Rapport played lengthy pass down the right touchline for junior forward Jackson Kestler, who crossed from the right edge of the penalty area into the box. Running on to the pass, Firouznam (above) fired past Highlanders goalkeeper Carlos Gonzalez for his second collegiate goal.
Siegel chalked up his initial three saves during the opening 33 minutes before the Highlanders equalized in the 35th, first earning a corner kick before midfielder Nathan Scott found Vukovic in front of goal with the Highlanders defender heading past Siegel.
Cal Poly placed four more attempts on frame during the second half, but was turned away each time by Gonzalez, who closed the matchup by thwarting Mustang sophomore forward Sean McTague for a second time on the night in the 89th.
"Again, in the last 20-25 minutes, we pushed right until the end and created the better chances in the game," Kennedy said. "A little more clinical in front of goal and we would have come away with all three points."
Playing three of its first four Big West matches at home inside Mustang Memorial Field, Cal Poly resumes action when hosting CSUN on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. and UC San Diego on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
