SAN LUIS OBISPO – Three of the Cal Poly men's soccer program's initial four Big West matches take place at Mustang Memorial Field, a stretch that concludes against CSUN on Wednesday, Oct. 4 (7 p.m.) and UC San Diego on Sunday, Oct. 8 (1 p.m.). Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+ for Cal Poly (2-5-2, 0-1-1), which dropped its Big West opener to UC Davis, 1-0 (Sept. 27), before drawing away to UC Riverside, 1-1 (Sept. 30), to earn its initial conference point of the season. Cal Poly enters Wednesday's matchup with CSUN (2-5-4, 0-0-2) seventh in the Big West table, but trailing joint second-place UC San Diego (2-6-3, 1-0-1) by just three points. CSUN, meanwhile, sits last in the standings following successive one-goal home setbacks to Cal State Fullerton (5-4) and Cal State Bakersfield (1-0). UC San Diego hosts Big West leader Cal State Fullerton Wednesday before heading to Cal Poly. The top six programs in the 10-team Big West table qualify for the Nov. 1, 4 and 11 Big West Championship.
CAL POLY VERSUS CSUN: Undefeated against CSUN in three straight, Cal Poly forced a scoreless draw during the previous Oct. 12, 2022 meeting in Northridge after junior goalkeeper Gabe Penner saved an 86th-minute penalty. Cal Poly is also undefeated at home to CSUN in the last four meetings with three wins against the Matadors in San Luis Obispo since 2014. CSUN, however, leads the Division I series, 18-12-8.
CAL POLY VERSUS UC SAN DIEGO: With the two programs meeting for just the third time, Cal Poly handed UC San Diego a 1-0 defeat in the first meeting between the two programs on Oct. 6, 2021 before the Tritons outlasted the Mustangs at home on Oct. 15, 2022, 4-3.
THE SIEGEL FLYS HIGH: An offseason transfer from Sacred Heart, graduate goalkeeper Justin Siegel recorded a Cal Poly best seven saves to earn his first clean sheet as a Mustang during the program's 4-0 victory at Gonzaga (Sept. 20). Siegel, who also produced six saves to preserve a 1-1 home draw with Utah Valley (Sept. 12), has started Cal Poly's last seven matches while ranking fifth among Big West goalkeepers with 3.3 saves per game and a 1.29 goals against average.
KESTLER'S TARGET ACCURACY: No Big West player places a higher percentage of his shot attempts on goal than junior forward Jackson Kestler at 62 (13-for-21) percent. A Sept. 17 opening goal against Air Force coupled with a two-goal effort at Gonzaga (Sept. 20) has Kestler as Cal Poly's leading scorer (and ranked ninth among Big West players). Kestler also leads the Mustangs while ranking fifth among Big West attackers with 2.3 shots per match.
KENNEDY TAKES THE MUSTANG REINS: After helping direct Stanford to NCAA Tournament College Cup championships in 2016 and 2017 and four Pac-12 Conference titles in seven years and having led Division II Fort Lewis College to NCAA Tournament national championships in 2009 and 2011 as head coach, Oige Kennedy was introduced as Cal Poly's fifth head coach at the Division I level on Dec. 9, 2022. Kennedy succeeds Steve Sampson, who retired at the conclusion of the 2022 season.
UP NEXT (SEPT. 11/15): Cal Poly plays three of its final five matches on the road, a stretch that commences with a Wednesday, Oct. 11 visit to Sacramento State. The Mustangs then renew the Blue-Green rivalry with a Sunday, Oct. 15 home matchup with UC Santa Barbara.
