Lisenbee, Guerra Lift Cal Poly to 2-0 Win versus CSUN
10/4/2023 10:11:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Conner Lisenbee's first goal of the season and freshman midfielder Diego Guerra's first collegiate goal five minutes apart late in the second half marked the difference Wednesday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer program delivered a 2-0 victory against CSUN at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by Dignity Health.
"We can be very proud of an all around performance at home," first-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "We felt that we had control and looked comfortable for most of the game. They had some attacking weapons – especially in transition – and we dealt with that better as we grew in the game. Again, we're showing growth with each game which is so important."
Scoreless into the 80th minute, Cal Poly freshman defender Joaquin Torres played an upfield pass for Lisenbee (above), whose arcing shot from the right edge of the CSUN penalty area sailed over Matadors goalkeeper Cooper Wenzel.
Five minutes later, freshman midfielder Rylan Firouznam connected with junior forward Jackson Kestler, who found Guerra in front of goal. Guerra, Cal Poly's eighth different goalscorer this season, fired his attempt past Wenzel.
Facing just eight CSUN shots and only one on frame, Cal Poly graduate goalkeeper Justin Siegel earned his second shutout as a Mustang.
With Wednesday's victory, Cal Poly (3-5-2, 1-1-1) improved to four points in the Big West standings, moving into a five-team tie for third place. The Mustangs trail second place CSU Bakersfield by just three points.
Cal Poly completes its two-match home stand on Sunday, Oct. 8 against UC San Diego. Kickoff on ESPN+ is 1 p.m.
"As a group, we're continuing to show how fit and strong we are and that we keep pushing at the end of games," Kennedy said. "I think we still have more levels to show. We're excited for another good opponent at home Sunday."
