Schaefer Brace Lifts Cal Poly to 3-1 Win versus UC San Diego
10/8/2023 4:36:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Luke Schaefer secured his first career two-goal game with strikes in the 32nd and 60th minutes and junior forward Jackson Kestler finalized the Cal Poly men's soccer program's 3-1 Sunday afternoon victory against UC San Diego with a 90th-minute effort inside Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
"We took a well-deserved lead and although we allowed UCSD to get back into the game, I was proud of how the boys relentlessly stuck to the task of playing with intensity," first-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "I don't think we would have been capable of that at the start of our journey together (this year)."
Graduate goalkeeper Justin Siegel recorded three saves for Cal Poly (4-5-2, 2-1-1), which moved into a three-team tie for second place in the Big West standings alongside Cal State Bakersfield (6-2-4, 2-1-1) and UC Santa Barbara (7-5-1, 2-1-1) on seven points. The three programs trail first-place Cal State Fullerton (10-2-2, 4-0-0) by five points with five regular season matches remaining.
The Mustangs were held without a shot on target until Schaefer latched onto a misplayed ball by UC San Diego defender Evan Wellerstein 45 yards from goal. Dribbling on goal, Schaefer rounded Tritons goalkeeper Mitchell Wilson (above) and scored near the right post.
Cal Poly's 1-0 lead last just eight minutes, however, as UC San Diego defender Matthew Lin played a ball from the right side of the penalty area that was redirected by Mustang freshman defender Parker Owens and past Siegel.
The Mustangs though regained their edge 30 minutes from full time as a ball over the top of the Tritons defense from freshman midfielder Rylan Firouznam fell for Schaefer, who poked the pass past Wilson.
With Siegel making his third and final save in the 84th minute, Kestler cemented victory with seven seconds remaining, first winning a ball deep in Cal Poly's end before dribbling the remaining length of the field, past Wilson and firing his team leading fourth goal of the season into an open net.
"We always want to be the aggressors in the game and find ways both in and out of possession that make our opponents have to be on the back foot," Kennedy said. "Two of the three goals we scored today came from that level of intensity."
Cal Poly resumes action when visiting Sacramento State on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. before hosting rival UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 5 p.m.
