Mustangs Settle for Wednesday Draw at Sacramento State
10/11/2023 8:05:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SACRAMENTO – Goalkeepers Justin Siegel and Gabe Penner were called upon to produce one save apiece Wednesday afternoon to combine on the Cal Poly men's soccer program's third shutout of the season, but the Mustangs settled for a scoreless draw against Sacramento State at Hornet Field.
Cal Poly (4-5-3, 2-1-2), which entered Wednesday's match as one of three teams tied for second place in the Big West standings on seven points, tested Sacramento State goalkeeper Mac Learned either side of halftime with junior forward Ashton Alonge turned away in the 37th minute and freshman defender Joaquin Torres stopped in the 85th.
"We felt disappointed to only come away with a point after creating so many chances in the game," said Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy, whose side enjoyed 11 total shot attempts and 10 corner kick opportunities. "Each game is an opportunity for us to learn and grow. We come away knowing that we need to be more ruthless in front of goal. We have to sharpen the tools this week to capitalize on key moments in the final third."
Sacramento (3-7-4, 0-1-4), which sustained its fourth tie in five Big West matches, totaled nine of its 12 shot attempts during the second half, but Siegel stopped Hornets forward Austin Wehner in the 61st before Penner – who came on with 16 minutes to go – turned away junior Alejandro Padilla in the 77th.
Cal Poly returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 15, renewing the Blue-Green rivalry with UC Santa Barbara. Kickoff from Mustang Memorial Field is 5 p.m. on ESPN+. The match will be preceded by the Cal Poly women's program's 2 p.m. game with CSUN.
"We're focused now on Sunday and the biggest rivalry in college soccer," Kennedy said. "We hope our fans can make lots of noise and become that 12th man. We'll be ready to get after it on Sunday."
