LOS ANGELES – A 34th-minute header from junior forward Finn Linas (top, center) marked the difference for the Cal Poly men’s soccer program Monday evening as the Mustangs departed LMU’s Sullivan Field with a 1-0 victory against the Lions.
Cal Poly sophomore goalkeeper Mathew Guerra chalked up three saves inside 25 minutes to keep Monday’s matchup stalemated before Linas scored with Cal Poly’s first and only shot on target of the night.
Salvaging a ball off Cal Poly’s end line with his chest, freshman defender Matt Rajecki played a pass back to junior midfielder Colin Pearce at the top right corner of LMU’s penalty area. Pearce fired a pass toward goal for Linas, who headed from eight yards past LMU goalkeeper Ky Mani Dade.
Outshot by LMU, 14-6, Cal Poly weathered six second-half attempts from the hosts to preserve victory.
