SAN LUIS OBISPO – Goals either side of halftime from junior forwards Devin Bening and Finn Linas were enough for the Cal Poly men’s soccer program Thursday evening as the Mustangs – off to their best start since 2014 – saw off Utah Tech, 2-0.
Outshooting Utah Tech, 17-5, and keeping the Trailblazers without a shot on target, Cal Poly (3-1-3) produced the eventual game-winning goal after 23 minutes. Successive shots from forward Jack Civitts, defender Matt Rajecki and forward Quinn Mahoney – all within an eight-second window – were blocked by Utah Tech, but the final attempt fell to Bening, who fired past Trailblazers goalkeeper Zack Jarvie from six yards.
The Mustangs limited Utah Tech to just one shot attempt in the second half with Linas doubling Cal Poly’s lead in the 59th. After a cross from midfielder Colin Pearce was chested down by a Utah Tech defender inside the penalty area, Civitts played a short pass back to Linas who fired through traffic and into the bottom left corner of the Utah Tech net.
In goal for Cal Poly, sophomore Mathew Guerra chalked up his third career save and second straight following Monday’s 1-0 win at LMU.
