SAN LUIS OBISPO – Devin Bening produced his first Division I goal Sunday evening, heading an 86th-minute cross from Colin Pearce over the line just 31 seconds after San Diego State scored as the Cal Poly men’s soccer program closed a two-game home stand with a 1-1 draw against the Aztecs.
Cal Poly (1-0-3) outshot the Aztecs, 16-6, and forced goalkeeper Nic Diana into five saves, but it was San Diego State (1-1-2) that broke the stalemate on 85 minutes with forward Jaxson Hutcheon and midfielder Gio Aguirre combing to set up midfielder Nik Orth, who headed past Cal Poly goalkeeper Mathew Guerra.
Just 31 seconds after the restart, however, Pearce fired a cross from the right touchline into the penalty area for a diving Bening, who redirected the pass past Diana to equalize.
Guerra finished with three saves for Cal Poly for the third successive match.
