Mustangs Come Up Short Sunday in Blue-Green Matchup
10/15/2023 8:48:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – An 82nd-minute goal from UC Santa Barbara midfielder Lucas Gonzalez decided Sunday evening's Blue-Green rivalry matchup as the Cal Poly men's soccer program – in front 8,128 fans at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital, the second highest NCAA attendance figure this season – dropped a 1-0 decision to the Gauchos.
"We felt that we pushed a good team all the way tonight and just needed a little bit more quality in front of goal," Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "So many times we got ourselves in the right spots and just needed a little bit more composure in the final action.
"What a special environment and privilege it was for our guys to get to play in front of tonight. We want to say thank you for everyone coming out. There are very few college soccer environments like this one in the country and competing in front of over 8,000 people was a huge honor for our young team."
Junior goalkeeper Gabe Penner chalked up two saves to keep the match scoreless through 81 minutes before Gauchos forward Salvador Aguilar – sliding in front of his Mustang defender in the penalty box – passed for Gonzalez. UC Santa Barbara's midfielder then fired past Penner near the left post for the eventual game-winner.
Cal Poly enjoyed one last chance to equalize, but sophomore forward Sean McTague's 87th-minute effort was stopped in front of frame by UC Santa Barbara goalkeeper Leroy Zeller.
With Sunday's setback, Cal Poly (4-6-3, 2-2-2) remained on eight points in the Big West standings and in fifth place. UC Santa Barbara (8-6-1, 3-2-1), meanwhile, moved into second on 13 points.
With the top six programs in the 10-team Big West table qualifying for the Nov. 1, 4 and 11 Big West Championship, Cal Poly resumes action at sixth-place UC Irvine (seven points) on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.
Sunday's attendance mark also ranked as the 40th highest regular season attendance figure in NCAA history.
