Mustangs Slip to 2-0 Wednesday Setback at UC Irvine
10/18/2023 9:08:00 PM | Men's Soccer
IRVINE – The Cal Poly men's soccer program conceded multiple goals in a Big West match for the first time this season Wednesday evening as UC Irvine scored in the 16th and 58th minutes to hand the Mustangs a 2-0 setback at Anteater Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Gabe Penner recorded three saves for Cal Poly (4-7-3, 2-3-2), which remained on eight points in the Big West standings and slipped to sixth place. The Mustangs were surpassed by UC Irvine (6-6-3, 3-3-1), which moved into a four-way tie for third with 10 points. The top six programs in the 10-team Big West table qualify for the Nov. 1, 4 and 11 Big West Championship with the top two sides receiving opening-round byes.
With two regular season matches remaining, Cal Poly completes its eight-game home schedule when hosting Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, Oct. 22. Kickoff from Mustang Memorial Field is 1 p.m.
Cal Poly twice tested UC Irvine goalkeeper Luke Pruter early with forward Diego Guerra turned away in the fifth minute and fellow freshman Jackson Miller stopped in the seventh. UC Irvine, however, found Wednesday's goal opening on 16 minutes as midfielder Mario Anaya played a deep ball from the left touchline and well outside Cal Poly's penalty area that skipped into the six-yard box and past Penner.
The Anteaters then doubled their lead 13 minutes after the restart with midfielder Samuel Atiye scoring from 12 yards in front of goal.
After producing his first save in the 42nd minute, Penner stopped UC Irvine in the 74th and 86th to keep Cal Poly's deficit at two goals.
