Cal Poly Climbs Big West Table with Sunday Rout
10/22/2023 4:56:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Five different Mustangs found the back of the Cal State Fullerton net Sunday afternoon as the Cal Poly men's soccer program produced its highest goal output in 10 years with a 5-0 rout of the Big West leading Titans at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by Dignity Health.
Junior goalkeeper Gabe Penner recorded three saves to earn his third career shutout for Cal Poly (5-7-3, 3-3-2), which improved to 11 points in the Big West standings and played itself back into the conference tournament field.
Sharing fifth place with UC Riverside (3-9-4, 3-3-2), Cal Poly need only defeat or draw Cal State Bakersfield in the Saturday, Oct. 28 regular season finale to qualify as one of six programs for the Nov. 1, 4 and 11 Big West Championship. A loss at Cal State Bakersfield, however, eliminates Cal Poly from postseason contention.
Defeated for just the second time in its last 14 matches, Cal State Fullerton (11-4-3, 5-2-1) – denied the opportunity to clinch the Big West regular season title by Cal Poly – still leads the conference table on 16 points.
Sunday's five-goal total marked Cal Poly's highest scoring output since a 5-1 home victory against UC Riverside on Oct. 4, 2013.
Cal Poly found Sunday's eventual winning goal in the 23rd minute as an initial shot from junior forward Jackson Kestler was saved by Titans goalkeeper Tetsuya Kadono, but pushed into the path of freshman midfielder Rylan Firouznam (above), who redirected the errant ball into the back of the net.
In the 32nd, Firouznam dribbled onto the right edge of the Titans penalty area before cutting a pass back for freshman midfielder Diego Guerra, who fired his second goal of the year past Kadono.
Cal Poly went up 3-0 just 47 seconds later after Titans defender Kevin Peraza was whistled for a hand ball inside the penalty area and graduate defender Emory Rapaport converted from the spot to record his first goal as a Mustang.
Just 20 seconds after the second-half restart, sophomore forward Luke Schaefer and freshman defender Joaquin Torres combined to set up sophomore forward Oren Stuppel, whose second goal of the season made it 4-0.
Sophomore forward Sean McTague then helped complete the scoring in the 60th, dribbling to the end line before crossing back for freshman midfielder Jackson Miller, who headed his first career goal past Titans reserve goalkeeper Michael Diaz.
Penner then recorded saves in the 80th and 86th minutes to preserve the shutout.
