Torres Equalizer Seals Big West Championship Spot for Cal Poly
10/28/2023 9:50:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BAKERSFIELD – A first career goal from freshman defender Joaquin Torres helped the Cal Poly men's soccer program clinch a spot in the 2023 Big West Championship as the Mustangs – needing just a point away to Cal State Bakersfield Saturday evening – secured a 1-1 draw.
Trailing early following an eighth-minute opening goal from Cal State Bakersfield forward Connor Mautino, Cal Poly (5-7-4, 3-3-3) found the equalizer in the 29th, first winning a corner kick before a misplayed ball by the Roadrunners in the penalty area fell to Torres, who became the program's 11th different goalscorer this year by smashing the ball past goalkeeper Brandon Limes.
Cal Poly, selected last among the conference's 10 men's soccer programs in August's preseason coaches poll, instead finished on 12 points in the Big West table and in fifth place alongside UC Riverside (3-9-5, 3-3-3). By virtue of a greater conference goal differential, the Mustangs edged the Highlanders for the fifth seed and will visit No. 4 UC Davis in the Wednesday, Oct. 1 opening round.
UC Riverside will visit third-seeded UC Santa Barbara in Wednesday's other opening-round match. A win at UC Davis advances Cal Poly to a Saturday, Oct. 4 semifinal matchup at either regular season champion Cal State Fullerton or runner-up UC Irvine, both of which earned first-round byes.
Cal Poly, which would have conceded its Big West Championship spot to CSU Bakersfield with a loss, returns to the postseason after a two-year hiatus. The Mustangs last reached the semifinals in 2015.
The highest remaining overall seed will host the Saturday, Oct. 11 Big West Championship final.
