Mustangs Eliminated from Big West Championship at UC Davis, 1-0
11/1/2023 5:32:00 PM | Men's Soccer
DAVIS – Junior goalkeeper Gabe Penner recorded four saves against fourth-seeded UC Davis Wednesday afternoon, but an 81st-minute goal from Aggies forward Chase Tanon eliminated the fifth-seeded Mustangs from the Big West Championship in the opening round, 1-0.
With Penner making three first-half saves to keep the matchup scoreless, UC Davis midfielder Kevin Welch won a header in front of Cal Poly's penalty area with the ball falling to defender Ryan Dieter out right. Dieter crossed into the box and after the ball was knocked down by a pair of Mustang defenders, Tanon latched onto it and knocked it past Penner for the decisive goal.
"We can be proud of how we played today. We felt overall it was a balanced game and that we created enough good attacking moments to get more from the game. Davis are a tough opponent and their staff do a phenomenal job each season to get the most out of their players. We wish them well in the rest of the tournament. We as a group are proud of how much growth we showed this fall. We know that we can take so much from the season. We will reflect on the ups and the downs. This was a fun journey and we are excited to get back after it in the winter and spring quarters. We also have to be really proud of our seniors, Toni , Justin, Emory, Zak and Gabe. At the start of the season we asked them all to leave the jersey in a better place then they found it. I think they absolutely achieved that this season. They have helped build some key foundations that will make our brotherhood stronger in the years to come. "
Cal Poly (5-8-4) was held to just three shot attempts during the first half before producing six in the second. The Mustangs tested UC Davis goalkeeper Charles Janssen just once though with sophomore forward Sean McTague turned away in the 52nd minute.
All-Big West honorable mention selection and junior forward Jackson Kestler led Cal Poly with three shot attempts.
With Wednesday's victory, UC Davis (8-7-3) – which failed to win any of its four conference home matches – advanced to face Big West regular season champion and top seed Cal State Fullerton in Saturday's semifinals.
Cal Poly, making its Big West Championship return following a year hiatus, took four points from its final two matches, first routing Cal State Fullerton at home, 5-0 (Oct. 22), before drawing away to Cal State Bakersfield, 1-1 (Oct. 28), to clinch its postseason spot. Selected last in the Big West preseason poll, the Mustangs secured a fifth-place showing under Kennedy.
"We, as a group, are proud of how much growth we showed this fall," Kennedy said. "We know that we can take so much from the season and will reflect on the ups and the downs. This was a fun journey and we're excited to get back after it in the winter and spring quarters.
"We also have to be really proud of our seniors – Tony Ruiz, Justin Siegel, Emory Rapaport, Zak Elbekraoui and Gabe (Penner). At the start of the season, we asked them all to leave the jersey in a better place than they found it. I think they absolutely achieved that this season. They have helped build some key foundations that will make our brotherhood stronger in the years to come."
