DAVIS – Junior forward Roman Anast (above) and senior midfielder Parker Mascott scored their first collegiate goals Sunday evening, but the Cal Poly men’s soccer program’s two-goal lead at the break was undone by two second-half UC Davis goals as the Mustangs finished in a 2-2 draw with the Aggies.
Cal Poly (0-0-2) surged ahead in the 24th minute as Anast (right, top) – who totaled just two shots on goal during in 15 appearances last season – converted with his lone attempt Sunday, taking a feed from junior midfielder Rylan Firouznam and slotting past UC Davis goalkeeper Talin Morgan in the bottom left corner of the Aggie net.
The Mustangs then doubled the advantage five minutes before the break as Mascott (below) – on for just eight minutes in only his second Division I appearance – fired into the bottom right corner after being set up by junior forward Devin Benning.
UC Davis, which outshot the Mustangs, 17-5, pulled its goal back seven minutes after the restart through a Cal Poly own goal.
Cal Poly freshman goalkeeper Mathew Guerra finished with four saves, turning away the Aggies in the 58th and 86th minutes.
The Aggies, however, found the game-tying goal two minutes from full time through midfielder Nico Collins.
