8/27/2026 10:29:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman defender Peyton Marmion scored his first collegiate goal, junior forward Quinn Mahoney produced his first of the season and freshman goalkeeper Mathew Guerra stopped a second-half San Jose State penalty to ensure his first career clean sheet as the Cal Poly men’s soccer program enjoyed a 3-0, home-opening victory Thursday evening.
Turned away in the 16th minute, Cal Poly found the eventual game-winner in the 27th after junior forward Colin Pearce slid a cross into the box for Marmion whose one-timed effort hit the top right corner of the San Jose State net.
The Mustangs then doubled their lead on 40 minutes after junior defender Charlie Hogan chested a ball down in midfield for senior Parker Mascott, who opened up San Jose State’s backline with a pass upfield. Mahoney raced across two defenders, latched onto the ball and rounded Spartans goalkeeper Ronin Axelson for the 2-0 advantage.
A 54th-minute San Jose State own goal finalized the scoring before Guerra dove low to his left in the 56th to thwart San Jose State midfielder Angel Fernandez’s penalty attempt.
Guerra finished with three saves for the second successive match as Cal Poly outshot San Jose State, 13-9.
