SAN DIEGO – Junior forward Finn Linas (above, right) produced his third goal of the season – a 23rd-minute equalizer – and sophomore goalkeeper Mathew Guerra chalked up two saves Wednesday evening as the Cal Poly men’s soccer program recorded a 1-1 draw against San Diego State atop the SDSU Sports Deck.
San Diego State (2-6-5, 0-0-2) grabbed Wednesday’s opening lead in the third minute with midfielder Max Mair heading a bounding ball inside the penalty box into the path of forward Jaxson Hutcheon, who fired the night’s first shot past Cal Poly sophomore goalkeeper Mathew Guerra.
The Mustangs (4-3-5, 0-1-2), however, leveled 20 minutes later with their first shot attempt. Sending a ball from his own half toward the Aztecs penalty area, sophomore defender Marlow Buettner earned his first collegiate assist after Linas flicked the bouncing ball over the top of Aztecs goalkeeper Nic Diana and under the crossbar to deadlock the matchup.
Guerra produced saves in the 40th and 52nd minutes to preserve the stalemate. At the other end of the Sports Deck, the Mustangs forced Diana into three second-half save while a 73rd-minute goal from junior midfielder Rylan Firouznam was chalked off for offsides.
