Cal Poly Finishes in 1-1 Tuesday Draw with Utah Valley
9/12/2023 10:11:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Sean McTague's first goal of the season during the 18th minute Tuesday evening handed the Cal Poly men's soccer program a lengthy lead against Utah Valley, but Wolverines midfielder Omar Yehya equalized 10 minutes from full time as the matchup finished in a 1-1 draw at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
Graduate goalkeeper Justin Siegel produced six saves for Cal Poly (0-1-3), which scored with its first shot on target as junior defender Nate Colley played a pass out right for McTague (above), who cut his Utah Valley defender toward the inside and fired past Wolverines goalkeeper Aden Mills for his second career goal.
"I thought tonight we pushed and competed well throughout the game," first-year head coach Oige Kennedy said. "We showed more progress all over the field and had lots of positive individual performances."
Siegel enjoyed four first-half saves to preserve Cal Poly's advantage before turning away the Wolverines once more in the 50th minute and, finally, the 75th.
Utah Valley, however, earned its ninth and final corner during the 80th minute with Wolverines midfielder Alejandro Silva playing the attempt directly in front of goal and near the top of the penalty area. Coming onto the ball, Yehya drove his second goal of the season through traffic and past Siegel.
"Each and every game is going to teach our young group something new," Kennedy added. "We know now that we have to be ruthless with the chances we get in the games. We have to understand the importance of finishing an opponent off when we are on top in the game."
Cal Poly closes a two-match home stand when hosting Air Force on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. The match will be preceded by the Cal Poly's women's program's game with Pacific at 12 noon.
