Cal Poly Outlasts Air Force Sunday Afternoon, 2-1
9/17/2023 6:46:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – First-half goals from forwards Jackson Kestler and Luke Schaefer (above) helped mark the difference Sunday afternoon as the Cal Poly men's soccer program picked up its first victory of the season with a 2-1 decision against Air Force at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
Graduate goalkeeper Justin Siegel recorded three saves for Cal Poly (1-3-1), which handed first-year head coach Oige Kennedy his first victory in charge of the Mustangs.
Cal Poly grabbed control of Sunday's matchup on 15 minutes as junior captain Nate Colley flicked a ball over the top of the Air Force defense for Kestler, whose smashed his first goal of the season into the roof of the opposition net.
With Siegel producing two first-half saves, Schaefer doubled Cal Poly's lead four minutes from the break, first receiving a pass from junior forward Ashton Alonge before firing off the gloves of Air Force goalkeeper Jakob Stone and into the back of the Falcons net.
Into the second half, Siegel produced his final save on 71 minutes before Air Force cut Cal Poly's lead in half during the 75th with midfielder Remi Smith converting a penalty attempt following a Mustang handball on the inside fringe of the penalty area.
Sunday's final attempt on goal came from Falcons midfielder Aiden Grubbs, who struck the left post in the 85th preserving Cal Poly's edge.
"We're very proud of how the boys have kept pushing hard throughout each game this season," Kennedy said. "At times, we haven't gotten the result that we felt we deserved, but they all stayed laser focused on the process of getting better each day and continuing to push the standard with each training session and game. Today we showed more growth and some grit to close out the game at 2-1. We're proud of that milestone."
Cal Poly completes Big West Conference preparations when visiting Gonzaga on Wednesday, Sept. 20 (6 p.m.) and rival UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Sept. 23 (7 p.m.).
"We have a lot of soccer to look forward to this week with trips to Gonzaga and then on to UC Santa Barbara," Kennedy added. "We're excited to keep getting after it together as a group and keep setting the highest possible standard."
