Three on Scoresheet as Cal Poly Blanks Gonzaga, 4-0

SPOKANE, Wash. – Junior Jackson Kestler produced his second career two-goal game, fellow forward Sean McTague scored his second of the season and freshman midfielder Rylan Firouznam enjoyed his first collegiate goal as the Cal Poly men's soccer program departed Gonzaga's Luger Field Wednesday evening as 4-0 winners.
Graduate goalkeeper Justin Siegel chalked up seven saves in Cal Poly's first shutout of the season as the Mustangs (2-3-1) recorded their largest margin of victory since a 5-1 home victory against UC Riverside on Oct. 4, 2013. With Siegel making five of his saves in the second half, Cal Poly produced its highest goal total since closing the 2017 season with a 4-1 home win against UC Santa Barbara.
"We've always felt the season is a marathon, not a sprint," first-year head coach Oige Kennedy said. "We have to keep believing in our methods and showing trust in each other. When we do that, we're capable of doing great things. Tonight, we pushed together and got a good result on the road against a tough opponent.
"I am proud of how the boys went about their tasks tonight and they continue to show their growth."
Kestler, who also scored twice at UC San Diego last fall, found the eventual winning goal in the sixth minute, taking a pass from McTague on the right side of the Gonzaga penalty area and firing past Bulldogs goalkeeper Wessel Sprangers outside the box.
Turning provider for Cal Poly's second goal, Kestler spun out of a midfield battle to find forward Conner Lisenbee in the 21st minute. Lisenbee then played a pass for McTague whose second goal of the year clanged off the left post and over the goal line.
Kestler handed Cal Poly a 3-0 advantage in 35th, converting Cal Poly's second opportunity from the spot this season after junior forward Ashton Alonge was hooked down in Gonzaga's penalty area.
Firouznam, making his sixth collegiate appearance, completed the scoring eight seconds from halftime, benefitting after sophomore forward Luke Schaefer dispossessed his defender near the left touchline before charging toward Gonzaga's goal. Schaefer's initial attempt went off the foot of Sprangers and across the goal mouth before falling toward Firouznam near the right post.
Cal Poly completes Big West preparations when visiting rival UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Sept. 23. Kickoff from Harder Stadium is 7 p.m.
"We'll enjoy the road win and get laser focused on the next game," Kennedy said. "We're excited for another opportunity against a great team. It's one of the best rivalries in college soccer so our guys will be ready to go."
