Cal Poly Scores Early and Often to Capture UC Santa Barbara Series
4/3/2022 4:06:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior center fielder Noellah Ramos supplied a pair of run-scoring triples and senior lefthander Krystyna Allman produced a complete-game, four-hitter as the Cal Poly softball program closed a three-game series against UC Santa Barbara Sunday afternoon with a 7-1 victory at Bob Janssen Field.
Cal Poly (8-21, 3-6), which split Saturday's series-opening doubleheader to earn its first series win against the Gauchos since 2017, secured Sunday's lone lead at the first opportunity. UC Santa Barbara starting righthander Lexy Mills (1-5) hit Ramos with one down during the bottom of the first before senior shortstop Maddie Amos delivered a run-scoring double down the right field line. Two batters later, sophomore right fielder Juju Sargent added a run-scoring single to plate Amos for the early 2-0 advantage.
After Allman set down UC Santa Barbara in order for a second time in the top half of the second inning, Cal Poly received the first run-scoring triple from Ramos before senior designated player Lily Amos belted her second homer of the season to left field to secure a 5-0 lead.
Ramos, who had produced six career triples since the 2018 season entering play Sunday, added her second of the afternoon in the third, lining another shot down the right field line to score sophomore catcher Kai Barrett and freshman third baseman Caroline Allman to run Cal Poly's lead to 7-0.
Back in the circle, Allman (5-11) retired eight of the first nine Gauchos she faced before conceding her first hit of the afternoon to UC Santa Barbara shortstop Madelyn McNally with two down in the top of the third. Allman hit Gaucho hitters in the fourth and fifth innings without allowing the baserunner past first before retiring UC Santa Barbara in order to cap the top of the sixth.
UC Santa Barbara scored its lone run in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs before a groundout by center fielder Tyler Goldstein plated right fielder Ashley Donaldson.
Cal Poly resumes action when opening a six-game road trip with a three-game set at Hawai'i (April 8-9). The series begins with a 9 p.m. PT (6 p.m. HT) matchup on Friday, April 8.
