Cal Poly Sweeps Friday Pair at Big West Leader Hawai’i
4/9/2022 12:45:00 AM | Softball
HONOLULU – Energized by a five-run first inning that included a three-run homer from senior shortstop Maddie Amos (above), the Cal Poly softball program earned its first victory at Big West Conference co-leader Hawai'i in six years, opening both a Friday evening doubleheader and three-game series with a 7-3 win at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Cal Poly then completed the doubleheader sweep in game No. 2 as Amos homered once more as part of a five-RBI effort and starting freshman righthander Kate Judy struck out a career best 12 hitters in a 12-2 win.
During Friday's opening victory, Cal Poly (10-21, 5-6) scored all the runs required for victory at the first opportunity. Freshman left fielder Jessica Clements reached on the first of Hawai'i's three errors to lead off the game before Rainbow Wahine starting lefthander Brianna Lopez (7-6) hit senior center fielder Noellah Ramos. Amos then belted her team leading fourth homer of the season. Junior second baseman Xiara Diaz and sophomore catcher Kai Barrett later supplied run-scoring hits as Cal Poly handed Hawai'i a 5-0 deficit before the hosts had left the field.
Hawai'i (13-13, 7-4) took two runs back in the bottom of the first through a home run by shortstop Nawai Kaupe. The Mustangs, however, reaffirmed the five-run cushion as RBI singles from right fielder Juju Sargent – who finished with a game high three hits – and fellow sophomore Hailey Prahm in the top of the second provided Cal Poly a 7-2 advantage.
In the circle for Cal Poly, senior starting lefthander Krystyna Allman (6-11) allowed four hits in three and one-third innings, conceding Hawai'i's third run in the fourth through a leadoff homer by designated player Haley Johnson.
Mustang freshman reliever Paige Maier took over for Allman with the Hawai'i bases loaded and just one down in the fourth, but stranded the bags full. Maier left another Hawai'i runner on to close both the first and sixth innings before stranding two more in the seventh to close the decision.
During Friday's second victory, Mustang starting freshman righthander Kate Judy (3-9) stranded two Hawai'i baserunners to close the first inning and Cal Poly took the game's only lead in the top of the second as Prahm and Clements enjoyed run-scoring hits to hand the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage.
With Judy setting down Hawai'i in order to close the second, Cal Poly returned in the third to load the bags with no outs before Sargent delivered a bases-clearing double for a 5-0 lead.
Hawai'i shortened the disadvantage to 5-2 in the bottom half of the third as second baseman Maya Nakamura hit a one-out, two-run homer. Cal Poly, however, received a two-run homer of its own just a half-inning later as a second shot from Amos placed the Mustangs up, 7-2.
Cal Poly then ran the lead to 9-2 in the top of the fifth as Amos followed a leadoff Prahm homer with a double to left center that plated Clements.
The Mustangs then packed on three more runs in the seventh through a two-run Maddie Amos double and an RBI single by senior designated player Lily Amos.
After allowing Nakamura's third-inning homer, Judy retired nine straight Hawai'i hitters until Johnson singled with one down in the sixth. She stranded two more runners to close that inning before retiring Hawai'i in order once more to close the contest.
Cal Poly looks to complete its first Big West road series sweep since 2016 when facing Hawai'i on Saturday, April 9 at 9 p.m. PT (6 p.m. HT).
