Cal Poly Completes Road Sweep of Hawai’i with 8-7 Win
4/9/2022 11:50:00 PM | Softball
HONOLULU – Sophomore catcher Kai Barrett's go-ahead single with two down in the top of the sixth inning marked the last of five lead changes Saturday evening as the Cal Poly softball program earned its first Big West Conference road series sweep in six years with an 8-7 win versus Hawai'i inside Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
After Hawai'i (13-14, 7-5) took a 7-6 lead with a four-run, fifth inning that included back-to-back home runs from shortstop Nawai Kaupe and second baseman Maya Nakamura, Cal Poly right fielder Juju Sargent singled to open the sixth. Sophomore first baseman Hailey Prahm then reached on a Hawai'i throwing error. Sargent advanced to third with the miscue before scoring to tie the game on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Barrett (above) – a graduate of Honolulu's 'Iolani School – provided the eventual game-winning RBI, singling to plate Prahm.
Tossing the final three innings for Cal Poly (11-21, 6-6) and striking out the Rainbow Wahine side in the sixth, freshman righthander Kate Judy (4-9) earned her second victory against Hawai'i in as many nights.
Cal Poly's three-game series sweep (the Mustangs won both ends of Friday's doubleheader) marked its first on the road against a Big West foe since sweeping Long Beach State, April 16-17, 2016. The Mustangs also produced a sweep at Hawai'i in 2014.
Cal Poly returns to the mainland to complete a six-game road trip at CSU Bakersfield April 15-16. Series action opens with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 15.
Hawai'i grabbed Saturday's initial lead with its first opportunity as a double steal attempt with two down in the bottom of the first inning saw Rainbow Wahine shortstop Nawai Kaupe cross home plate.
Cal Poly, however, surged ahead in the top of the second, first placing a pair at the corner bases with one down before sophomore catcher Kai Barrett singled to score Prahm. Two batters later, senior center fielder Noellah Ramos grounded out to plate sophomore third baseman Mia Perez for a 2-1 lead.
In the circle for Cal Poly, senior starting lefthander Krystyna Allman stranded a lone Hawai'i baserunner to close the second before a two-run homer from designated player Haley Johnson in the third provided the hosts a 3-2 advantage.
Cal Poly, which had loaded the bases during the top of the first without scoring, capitalized on the same opportunity in the fourth as Sargent tripled with two down to bring home freshman left fielder Jessica Clements, Ramos and senior designated player Lily Amos for a 5-3 lead.
The Mustangs then returned in the fifth to load the bases with two down before senior shortstop Maddie Amos drew a four-pitch walk to force home freshman pinch runner Jade Contapay.
